The Carter's brand was created by Mr. William Carter in Needham, Massachusetts, in 1865, and Carter's first product was woven in Mr. William Carter's kitchen.
During the 1920s and 1940s, Carter's invented many special designs for baby clothes. Examples include Nevabind cuffs, and Handicuff gloves to prevent babies from scratching themselves, and Jiffon-style necklines to help moms easily dress their babies. By the 1950s, Carter's shifted its focus to baby clothing. In 1965, Carter's celebrated the brand's 100th anniversary and produced more than 40 million pieces of baby clothing in that year.
